What does “counselor” mean in this job offer?
School guidance, social counselling and a psychologist role are not interchangeable descriptions. Before preparing a CDA Social Counselor application, ask the employer for the professional title, the facility’s regulator and the actual duties. An overseas registration or a familiar job title does not settle those questions.
- Identify the service. Who will you support, in which setting, and through which employer or establishment?
- List the expected activities. Separate counselling and support work from any proposed testing, diagnosis or other specialist activity. Ask which activities the intended licence and facility permit.
- Clarify responsibility. Who reviews your work, handles a referral and provides support when a situation exceeds your role?
- Confirm the category. Use the duty description when requesting clarification from CDA; do not select a title simply because your degree appears in its table.

Practice record: summarise employment dates, duties and supervision. Show placements, voluntary work and paid employment separately so the reviewer can distinguish them.
Proposed role: attach the employer’s description and your unresolved questions. Keep client identities and session notes out of the initial enquiry.

CDA’s published licensing information places Social Counselor on the professional examination route. Psychologist, Social Worker and Special Education Teacher are listed on that route as well. Confirm the current assessment instructions and available dates with CDA before making a booking.
The training route listed for four other categories is separate. Do not assume that a course certificate replaces the examination for your title. Ask what must be reviewed before assessment, how a sitting is confirmed and which result or certificate belongs in your application. The published scope table lists a master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology or Education in Counseling, with one year of experience. CDA determines whether your particular qualification and practice evidence meet its requirements.
Is Social Counselor the same licensing title as Psychologist?
